Grace

For many years Grace made her best attempts to resist the calling to the camera.  Now she can barely go through an entire day without composing every moment of the world around her in frames.  Her keen eye and creative approach are what she depends on most to produce the perfect image...and to bargain shop.  Believe it or not, Grace's ability to spot a great deal is actually the mark of a highly trained and detailed eye.  If she didn't spend her days as a photographer, Grace would make a great style coach and price hunter.

An introvert at heart, her perfect day would begin by waking up without an alarm clock.  However, being the detail-oriented perfectionist that she is (and being motivated by the knowledge that anxious clients are eagerly awaiting their images), Grace usually can be found editing images into the wee hours of the night.  She loves that her work brings joy to other people and is happy to use an alarm clock if only for that purpose.  Grace is a lover of beauty and style.  She enjoys art, design, fashion, food, cuddling with her hubby, breaking out in show tunes at random times, and of course, weddings.  Most importantly she enjoys roaming the beautiful aisles of Target.

Grace loves that she gets to work side by side with her best friend and husband, Hun, who makes her laugh every day and inspires her to be better at all she does.  In photography she truly has found the only medium where she can express herself in a completely free way.  Best of all, she loves love. She loves the opportunity to capture love in all forms, and to do all she does to the glory of God who is the ultimate expression of love.

Hun

Hun claims to have become a wedding photographer by accident. At the prodding of his wife, he soon learned that what initially started out as an artistic hobby would become a full-fledged business endeavor. As an artist, Hun loves the challenge of fusing his passion for art and the necessity of business. The businessperson he most looks up to is his wife, Grace, and not just because she likes doing most of the work. He thinks she's pretty awesome. She is his partner in business, crime and in Rock Band.

Hun is the consummate artist. He is a photographer, a musician, and a closet cosmetologist who sometimes gives unsolicited hairstyle critiques. Hun brings his intelligent eye to his work as a photographer. He firmly believes the combination of the moment and the interpretation of that moment are what make up a perfect picture. He finds it a rewarding challenge to anticipate the moments that matter most in life and capture them for posterity.

For Hun it's often the simple and intrinsically meaningful moments he remembers most in the weddings he photographs. The most memorable ceremony he shot was a small, intimate gathering of about 8-10 guests in a local Seattle Park. His favorite wedding venue was a barn in New Jersey.

Despite his love of classic, simple and nostalgic settings, he still can't live without his iPhone. In his spare time Hun enjoys music, all matters of technology, gadgetry and doing all he can to maintain the title his friends gave him of "Rock Band snob."

Christina and David . Proposal

This past weekend was a momentous one for our family. Our not-so-little-anymore nephew David got engaged! I remember our first talks of girls and relationships when he was in middle school like it was yesterday, and now he’s all grown up and gonna get married soon! Christina is such a darling and there are so many things we have in common – one of which all three of us girls share a birthday in October, her and her future sister-in-law Gloria (pictured below) on the same exact day even! All throughout their relationship, they have been crossing the US/Canada border each time they see each other, so it was perfect that it happened on middle ground – a perfect way and analogy to start their future together.

From My Heart To Yours…

Earlier this week, one of my close friends Rachel and I were catching up over her yummy cooking.  She shared with me about a business mission trip to Thailand that she was planning on going to through her church (Overlake Christian Church). She would be part of a small select group to help fight human trafficking by means of intervention, prevention strategy, establishing business opportunities, and rescue while traveling to Bangkok, poor villages in the North, and Pattaya. I was thinking how I admired her and her heart, and then before I knew it, she was asking me to consider going as well. I was definitely caught off guard and immediately overwhelmed with thoughts like “Who am I to be able to do something of this caliber? and What could I even offer?” Basically, I was fearful. You see, I’ve never been on a mission trip before because I always served locally and felt that my mission and calling was always that – local. My heart went out for the street girls in Thailand who sell their bodies daily, but I still leaned on not going because I could think of tons of reasons why I can’t. Rather, I would be more than content just being able to support Rachel. Nevertheless, I promised her that I would think and pray about it and get back to her by the end of the week with a decision. As I got in my car, I prayed, “God, if this is something you want for me, please show me the word “Thailand” before week’s end.” And that was that. Two mornings later, after I did my usual routine and caught up on emails, I logged onto facebook and the first thing I saw was someone’s photo album titled “Thailand”.  I was like, “Really God?” and sat there in amazement because I have never in my whole entire life received a literal sign like this.

So here’s the part where I get awkward because my initial inclination is to just pay for the mission on my own because I hate, let me rephrase, I LOATHE asking for money. This is very humbling for me, but I also know first-hand the joy that comes in giving.

If this purpose touches your heart in any way and you’d like to partner with me by praying for me and/or contributing financially and/or giving me any tips on Thailand, please email me at Thailand@ghkim.com and I will give you more details.

Even as I type all this, I’m still having a hard time realizing that I’m actually going to be in Thailand in two months!

I’m scared, excited, and hopeful all at the same time. I don’t know what to expect, but I do anticipate a life-changing experience. After all, Hun’s photo mission trip to Turkey in 2002 was where he realized his love for me. ;)

Thank you so much for taking the time to read this.

P.S. I was hesitant to post this on our blog, but after some thought, I asked myself why not? We post other personal things here and most of our clients book us because they get to know what kind of people we are through this medium.  Plus, a lot of our family and friends subscribe. If someone gets offended by this, I don’t know what to say except to please just think of me as a shy little girl scout kindly asking to support a cause if you choose to. No harm in that, right? :)

Kathy - So happy you decided to share this on your blog, Grace. Thank you! What an important cause and amazing thing that God has called you to!!January 8, 2010 - 8:44 am

YK - I admire you for obeying God's calling and for posting this on your blog! You rock! I would love to support you in any way you need!January 8, 2010 - 11:37 am

Ali - Mahalo for the personalized sharing Grace :) Esp the part about Hun's realization on HIS mission trip...that was nice to read :) And as I was reading your last few sentences I was just imagining you asking "Would you like to buy some cookies please?" in a cute little uniform complete with beret :) hehe. xoxoxJanuary 8, 2010 - 1:37 pm

Happy New Year friends! May 2010 be the most amazing year yet!

Anne and James . Portrait

Hope all of you got what you wanted from Santa this Christmas, but most importantly enjoyed the love and laughter of your loved ones!

I’m thrilled to share another anniversary session (my personal fave to photograph!)! This one was especially fun for me because it was of my dear friends Anne and James. Anne is as cute-as-a-button and our friends call James oh-so-debonaire. They lead the small group that Hun and I are involved with, and James is one of the pastors of our church. They are among the most generous people I know where I almost feel like it’s my birthday every time I see them, and I see them a lot. Most of the couples we shoot, we only get glimpses into their relationship together, but since we know these two well, I can say wholeheartedly that they are a portrait of love. I love how they love each other. I love how they love others. I love them. After you see their session, you might fall in love with them too.

Saying Grace

Dear God,

As we gathered ’round the table earlier this evening, gave thanks, and stuffed ourselves silly more than the turkey itself, I couldn’t help but well up with tears because of the many things I’m grateful for in my life. Today, I’m especially thankful to You for…

… my husband… who is all that and then some…

… my dad… who I missed terribly because he was gone on missions for most of this year, but arrived home safely yesterday…

… my mom’s health… which just last year was deteriorating and looked grim, but somehow a miracle happened this year…

… my in-laws… who don’t treat me like an in-law, but love me like their own child…

… our dear friends… who surround us and share their love with us in their own respective ways…

… our clients… who trust and believe in us. Without them, there would be no GH Kim Photography

… our faithful readers… who encourage us and give us the gift of attention by visiting and leaving comments on this blog…

… and for sweets… which make my taste buds sing with glee and always remind me that life is sweet.

Amen.

thanksgiving

Amy Huang - man.. how'd you get that shot.. was there a sky light?December 5, 2009 - 3:03 pm

Amy Huang - AMEN to everything you said. :) I'm glad God has blessed you so abundantly and may he continue to in this coming new year and of course the years to come!December 5, 2009 - 3:05 pm

GRACE - Hun took this gorgeous shot. There was no skylight, just available light from the windows and from the candles. :)December 7, 2009 - 8:25 pm

Jessica - Amen. This is such a beautiful shot with the candles illuminating the table. :)December 10, 2009 - 11:35 am

Ode to Hun

Today’s a very important day… the birthday of a beloved man named Hun.
One who came out a preemie, being efficient to get out of the womb.
He didn’t grow up with a silver spoon,
but he did utilize every moment with opportune.
Who else could respond to emails so soon?
Oh how he loves that T-Pain’s auto tune.
He’s a closet bookworm who loves books like Twilight and Dune.
Which reminds me, Team Edward or Team Jacob in New Moon?
He’s 35 today, but he’s definitely no prune.
He walks into any room and makes a big boom!
A rock star, a photographer, a jack-of-all trades who makes his wife swoon.
I’ll end it here so his head doesn’t balloon.
You are loved by many, oh Hunny Hun Hun!Today’s a very important day… the birthday of a beloved man named Hun.

One who came out a preemie, being efficient to get out of the womb.
He surely didn’t grow up with a silver spoon,

He’s the most loyal man you’ll meet which is sometimes presumed.

I also want to give a big shout out to Judy! Being the domestic goddess that she is, she would not take no for an answer. Not only did she bake two dozen Chocolate Salted Caramel Cupcakes for my birthday last month, she baked a whoppin’ five dozen Candied Sweet Potato Cupcakes with the cutest little toppers with different “H”s for Hun’s birthday (pictured above)! Is she the sweetest thing or what?! (pun totally intended)

Yurika and Chris . Portrait

I was bummed when we were unavailable to photograph Yurika and Chris’ wedding last year, so when they contacted again about taking photographs for their one year anniversary, I was more than thrilled! I think that more couples should take anniversary pictures to document such love. Something about Chris’ calm demeanor always seemed to put Yurika at ease, and they share a really sweet kind of love. We had quite the adventure; puddle dodging and huddling underneath a shelter with many others while it rained buckets, watching as if it were a water show. But it’s that very refreshing rain and the beautiful autumn leaves that made me fall even more in love with my city.

Laina and Raymond . Engagement

It speaks volumes to us when couples contact us even before having their wedding date or venue set – that photography is their number one priority, that they trust us out of thousands of photographers, and we are THAT important to them. Laina and Raymond are one of those couples. Laina is originally from Seattle and Raymond is from New York, but on one fateful day, they met through a mutual friend at a Fourth of July get-together. Fireworks went off and the rest is history. Since they were visiting from out of town, we had no room to reschedule their session so it was to be on, rain or shine. It wasn’t necessarily shine, but you wouldn’t think it different from their beaming personalities. When most people would be hesitant, they had no qualms about sitting on the wet grass, they helped me gather leaves without me even asking them to, and to top things off, they are simply gorgeous!
